Joining us in September?

Dear new Reception parents and carers,

We are delighted that you and your child will be joining our school in September and would like to welcome you all to the Stepney Greencoat community.

Throughout the summer term we usually hold a number of events to support you and your child in their transition to our school. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic it may not be possible for all of these to take place or they may have to take place virtually rather than in person. As the situation changes we will update you.

In the meantime, we would like to point you in the right direction to help you with your child’s start…

Home Visits

We would normally carry out home visits to all families towards the end of the summer term. This is to meet the child and family in their home environment and learn a little more about you and your child.

Induction Morning for Pupils

Again, we normally hold an induction morning for Reception pupils on the first Friday in July. This usually involves the pupils coming in to class for a couple of hours to meet their teacher and peers, and stay for lunch.

Induction for Parents and Carers

We normally hold an induction meeting for parents sometime in June. During this meeting we go through everything you need to know in detail. Until we know when and how this can happen we would recommend having a look around our school website as a good place to start.

The uniform page has details the uniform and where to get it. The PTFA also hold uniform sales once a month at school where all items are £1. These sales will recommence when it is safe to do so.

The school day

Please take a look at Our School Day, this takes you through the general timings of an average day at school.

Finally, we do hope that your child may be able to do the following tasks when they start Reception. However, all children are different and if they struggle with any of this at the moment, please don’t worry, but you may like to spend some time practising these things before September.

  • Feed themselves, using cutlery
  • Do their coat up and fasten their shoes
  • Dress themselves
  • Use the toilet independently
  • Recognise their name on clothing
  • Write their name
  • Recognise numbers to 10 and beyond
  • Count to 10 and beyond
  • Be able to hold a book the right way around
  • Be able to follow the words in a book left to right
  • Be able to turn a page

We do hope to be able to see you all as soon as possible. If you have any questions please do email

Stay safe.
